At Kraken Communications, our number one goal is to help you. Our slogan, "Write Powerfully," drives us to bring the words of our clients to life.
Although we specialize in working with new writers, we also assist many lifetime writers with their work. The common thread? Helping you with your words as best we can.
My experience, like my personality, is eclectic. I've written and published 6 picture books and 9 romance novels. I've also written testimony presented to the U.S. Congress, and helped multi-national banks meet their regulatory requirements.
In addition to writing things on my own, I've helped many people, including accountants, military officers, drag queens, and computer programmers, to find their own voices and develop as writers. That's the legacy I hope to build on as I grow Kraken Communications.
I have a BA from Smith College in English literature and anthropology, as well as an MA in children's literature from Simmons College.
This is probably a frustrating answer, but cost is extremely dependent on what you need, and the length of your work. Kraken can provide you with price lists specific to Children's Literature, Long-Form Fiction, Academics & Non-Fiction, and Professional Writing upon request.
Generally speaking, our services are approximately $80 per hour. Flat rate is also available, and is often recommended for longer pieces. We do offer some discounts for local writers and entrepreneurs. Please inquire for more details.
Always! We are happy to make the time to work with you. Reach out and tell us about your project. We can provide you with price lists, and the first consultation is always free.
A lot of writers have this fear. It's perfectly normal. In addition to promising that this would go against the integrity of our mission as a company, there are a few things to keep in mind here:
1) We are happy to sign non-disclosure agreements regarding our work together.
2) Kraken's contracts with our clients speak to the fact that you retain ownership of your work.
3) We have a policy that we do not share our clients' documents or publications with anyone else without written approval from the owner of the work.
Timing is dependent on two major factors:
1) The length (word count) of your project
2) The level of editing (or writing) you require
If you have written a picture book and only want one round of edits, the turnaround time should be a week or less. If, however, you have a 100,000 word novel and you want line-by-line edits, the time required may be significantly longer. Usually we can work around whatever deadlines you have.
No. We can help you prepare your book for publication or submission, but our focus is on content of your work, not its publication. Plus, since the publishing business is extremely unpredictable, we cannot guarantee that your work, even in its best form, will be published. However, we can walk you through the various avenues to publication (traditional big house publishing, smaller houses, and self-publishing), and what each requires.
A rising tide lifts all boats. We aren't in the business of competing with other editing or writing companies. Just like most small editing and writing businesses out there, we are in this field because we love it, and we have a talent for it. We like to think we're fun to work with, and get good results, but there are many many other professionals out there who are doing amazing work as well.
We encourage you to reach out to more than one firm if you're on the fence about what you need. If you speak with us and then pick a different editor, that is perfectly fine! Writing is a very personal subject, and you should always do what is right for your own work and peace of mind. This may be a competitive business, but that doesn't mean it has to be a cutthroat one.
